Essay4 1 Essay4 1 Sydea Gardner Professor Shipps English 101 December 11, 2104 Police ruthlessness today, is getting increasingly more of a predominant issue in the time of 2014. This issue not just has an effect on the including families, yet in addition to the network and the equity framework that America has worked for now. Despite the fact that, police severity is an issue, the greater social issue is the absence of equity providing for the falling casualties. The way that we can see improvement in the equity framework is for congress to build up another law and discipline, that explicitly manages circumstances, for example, police severity and unfair murdering by the police. A circumstance that police ruthlessness happened with no equity is the ongoing instance of Eric Garner. On July seventh, 2014, In the city of New York Eric Garner was slaughtered from a savage strangle hold that is likewise unlawful, by a Staten Island police official Daniel Pantaleo. Only minutes before Eric Garner took his last inhale he more than once communicated to the police office that he was unable to relax. There was no CPR given to Eric Garner for the time he dropped because of pressure to his chest and neck. An hour after the occurrence Eric Garner was articulated dead at the medical clinic. Wikipedia gave that City clinical analysts presumed that Garner was executed by neck pressure, alongside the pressure of his chest and inclined situating during physical restriction by police and administered his demise as a crime. With video film of this episode, after five months a fantastic jury settled on the choice not to arraign the cop who utilized the unlawful and destructive strangle hold on unarmed regular citizen, Eric Garner. This treachery immediately spread worldwide and made residents the mental fortitude to begin fights and rallies for police prosecution all through the states. This issue impacts the relatives of Eric Garner, by not having genuine feelings of serenity that his enemy of their dad, spouse, child and companion was not brought the conventional discipline for his unfair activity and was neglected by the equity framework. Before Eric Garner there was a case fundamentally the same as it, the instance of Oscar Grant. On January first, 2009,

Marketing Analysis on Google Inc Essay

With the target of â€Å"To arrange the world’s data and make it generally available and useful† (Google, 2012), Google extends its business to endeavor towards turning into the pioneer of web related supplier, specifically in Internet research and promoting innovation. The organization has extended broadly and all around, giving its inquiry administration in an enormous number of various dialects and nations through its own interesting procedure. The report begins with a conversation about the market Google is working in, how Google shrewdly deals with its internationalization and globalization methodology as indicated by its own market position in various stage. Followed by the remark on whether its expansion system fitting over the entire universal market. The report at that point will assess this procedure for the most part center around the part of the possibility to harm its own image, particularly dependent on the instance of their disappointment extension in the Chinese market. At that point the report will take a gander at sway for the market as Google completely enter the Android advertise, Google’s plan of action regarding reating income will be portrayed and handled by the study of whether the model would be supportable in the long haul. The report at long last will characterize the market Google work in and how it goes into android market will be clarified in detail. Also, there are a few proposals gave regarding its practical improvement through the entire report. ? Characterizing the market which Google Inc’ works in? The market where Google works in is shared and intuitive; Google has obtained and converged with various organizations, which have given it a serious edge over different firms. It as of late gained Motorola and this brought a great deal of hypothesis concerning whether it could deal with the equipment business with no related knowledge or vital abilities According to the case (Tangirala and Debapratim, 2012), Google had no aptitudes in the flexibly chain, checking physical stock or accomplishing efficiencies. Anyway such acquisitions have profited Google since it has had the option to have more reach as it would now be able to target portable clients with the new equipment business. Different organizations it has worked together with are HTC and T-Mobile on executing the Android stage. Rivalry Nature is likewise very serious. Confronting mammoths like Apple, Microsoft and Facebook implies that Google must be exceptionally versatile and keep up their piece of the overall industry by being progressively forceful in their advertising techniques. (Tangirala and Debapratim, 2012), Google says that their obtaining of Motorola will have the option to increase the opposition. Motorola’s buy will completely carry Google into the versatile market as they will currently have equipment for their working framework Android, Also Motorola will reinforce the protecting of Google as they have in excess of 17,000 licenses in their name. Apple and other portable suppliers may feel compromised by this move. (Rusli and Miller, 2011) Diversification More to this, Google has not concentrated on its center business of being a web index rather it is broadening and searching for new open doors for development. Google has ventured into different portions, for example, maps and Google researcher, in the interchanges segment there is Gmail and an endeavor section where distributed computing and Google docs are included, person to person communication among others. This implies Google isn't just ready to contact a more extensive crowd however that it can spread dangers. Broadening implies that on the off chance that one territory of their business bombs they have a choice to depend on. (Tangirala and Debapratim, 2012) Innovation Google’s endurance could be credited to its exceptionally inventive structure. It has a culture of being imaginative and an air that urges representatives to bring new thoughts and inventiveness. Be that as it may, Google must maintain on advancing in control to exceed their rivals and to keep at pace with the adjustments in the exceptionally unpredictable worldwide condition (Tangirala and Debapratim, 2012) Infrastructure Along with all the organizations that Google has procured, they additionally have server farms and servers which it uses to make its web nearness and to store data. These frameworks increment dependability and make data get to quicker. Google Inc’ had an aggregate of 90,000 servers by 2010 and they contributed vigorously on innovation this gives Google a decent stage. Pg. 4 Some of it is virtual for instance distributed computing. (Tangirala and Debapratim, 2012) ? What’s internationalization and globalization procedure? In what direction Google is going? Internationalization technique is an improvement procedure that ventures need to offer their items and administrations outside their nation of origin, it typically reflected as more noteworthy presence in various areas around the globe. That is the reason internationalization additionally alludes as global extension (Stephen and Karin, 2002). Internationalization system is an advancement arranging during the procedure of internationalized activity and the executives, which is intended to give the help of improving company’s seriousness and condition flexibility. Enterprises have received this system see abroad market independently. They treat the business sectors diversely because of different markets’ highlights. Globalization methodology alludes to the strategies of worldwide joining, which consolidate the universal tasks and markets into a unified vital element (Stephen and Karin, 2002). Organizations that utilization this technique are commonly ground-breaking worldwide endeavors, they endeavor to consume advertises in their own ventures. Notwithstanding, if utilizing this technique improperly, it is bound to detrimentally affect the entire organization. The value of globalization system is that organizations can pack their endeavors in building upper hands by utilizing capacities and planning exercises through limits. Which like a twofold edged blade, the fault is that it is difficult to organize between every auxiliary just as among headquarter and auxiliaries, on the grounds that each host nation has their own business attributes. As per the gathered confirmations Google will in general be depending on the globalization technique. In any case, as referenced over, one purpose behind organizations receiving a globalization technique is that they need to corner the market in their own industry. Unquestionably, Google accomplished this objective. In October 2011, Google represents 82. 4% of the overall work area web crawler piece of the overall industry. Moreover, in 2008, Google moves its worldwide showcasing structure portrayal workplaces to Research and Development focus, and afterward to associations with different undertakings, which mirrored that Google bit by bit incorporated the upper hands from the collusion organization and improved its own capacities (Ronen, 2009). Moreover, Google has numerous R&D focuses around the world. For example, if the product was R&D in Israel, this product isn't just had practical experience in Israel advertise, yet in addition propelled all inclusive by utilizing various dialects. Accordingly unmistakably Google didn't concentrate on restricting their items or administrations for various markets these days. At long last, globalization is concentrating on building joined upper hand. So as to keep its serious edges, Google moves and offer results of innovation developments inside different R&D focuses, and with collusion associations to interface the activity nd the executives exercises from various regions and areas. Google’s recovery from china, impacts upon globalization plan. As indicated by the rundown of information realities (2012), China is the second most impressive nation on the planet. What's more, in Fleming’s (2010) report, â€Å"U. S. , China, and India will be the three most remarkable nations in 2025†. These delineate that China is a colossally powerful country around the globe. In addition, China has in excess of 500 million web clients (Efrati and Chao 2012), and the number is as yet expanding. China is a market which can't be overlooked. Google’s retreat from the Chinese market has certainly affected upon Google’s by and large worldwide extension technique. A large portion of the Asian nations have solid local relationship and China has a broadly sway on them. As we as a whole know, eastern nations are in high setting societies, be that as it may, Google is from a low setting society which is very surprising from high setting society. Their methods of maintaining a business are very unique. It appears that if Google can't work effectively in China, it can't work well in other Asian nations either, for example, Japan and Korea. What's more, this will profoundly affect its worldwide development methodology. As the image (adjusted from Chardonneau’s slides) appeared in informative supplement 1, Asia claims the greatest web market, and Google’s inclusion in Asia is so feeble. On the off chance that Google despite everything needs to accomplish its worldwide extension procedure, it needs to come into the Asian market and as a matter of first importance, Google needs to take care of the issue in China. Truth be told, Google’s quit in China offers its rivals a decent chance to go into the Chinese market. All things considered, not all the global organizations can't deal with the activity issues in China. Since Google declared its retreat, its piece of the overall industry has declined 5% and its greatest rival in China, Baidu has expanded by half (Powell 2010). Other web organizations like Microsoft, Sohu and Tencent where all profit by this extraordinary open door which offered by Google (Powell 2010). Developing your rivals will clearly decrease your own advantages. An ever increasing number of ground-breaking contenders will totally hamper Google’s worldwide extension. What's more, they have to continue investing amounts of energy to the beta test before they aunch any new items into new market, particularly in the Asian market. It needs to redo it accor

Minnesota nonprofit provides payday loan relief - Inside Subprime 6

Minnesota nonprofit provides payday loan relief - Inside Subprime 6/12/18 Minnesota nonprofit provides payday loan relief Minnesota nonprofit provides payday loan reliefInside Subprime: June 12, 2018By Lindsay FrankelA statewide nonprofit organization is helping Minnesota residents pay back their payday loans interest-free.If a payday borrower meets their criteria, Exodus Lending will pay off their entire payday loan balance, and give them 12 months to repay with zero interest or fees. The organization has also partnered with churches and other nonprofits to develop programs to keep Minnesota residents out of debt in the first place. Local bank leaders have already agreed to invest in these programs. Clay County has the highest instance of  payday loans in Minnesota, and this is partly due to its location. While payday lenders in North Dakota must put borrowers on a registry to ensure they do not take out multiple loans, crossing the border allows these borrowers to take out new loans. But this only perpetuates a borrower’s financial struggles. Then they get a third loan to pay off the second loan, an d just gets them wrapped up in the cycle of debt, said Sara Nelson-Pallmeyer, executive director at Exodus.Payday loans in Minnesota cost borrowers an average of 252 percent annually, but payday loans in North Dakota carry even higher interest rates at an average of 530 percent annually. Unfortunately, this information isn’t readily available to borrowers. Michelle Rydz, Executive Director of the High Plains Fair Housing Center, investigated payday lenders’ treatment of borrowers by visiting a local payday lender incognito. There was no information they could hand me, Rydz said. They just said, Look, you can just get $500, pay it back  in two weeks. No brochure, no pamphlets, no information.Without the right information, borrowers are likely to view payday loans as quick-fix solutions to their financial problems, because that’s how lenders market these products. In reality, payday loans have caused financial harm to many low-income families in Minnesota. The average payday loa n borrower in Minnesota earns an average of $30,000 per year, making it a stretch to cover basic expenses, let alone afford the high interest rates and fees associated with these risky loans. Payday loans also disproportionately affect minorities. When compared with all Minnesotans, African-Americans were twice as likely to reside within 2.5 miles of a payday lender, according to Pew. Exodus Lending was established in 2016, and since then the organization has helped more than 160 people get out of debt. Other non-profits, such as Neighbors Lending, work with families who are struggling financially before they turn to payday loans. Those in need of financial assistance should seek alternatives before taking out a payday loan. At the very least, borrowers should be well-informed of the risks associated with using these products. If you are a Minnesota resident struggling to get out of debt, you can reach out to Exodus Lending at (612) 615-0067.To learn more about  payday lending in th e United States, check out these related pages and articles from OppLoans:California Payday LoansGeorgia Payday LoansIllinois Payday LoansFlorida Payday LoansMichigan Payday LoansTexas Payday LoansVisit OppLoans on  YouTube  |  Facebook  |  Twitter  |  LinkedIn

The San Antonio Art Museum - 1135 Words

The exhibition that I viewed at the San Antonio Art Museum was called â€Å"28 Chinese†. This exhibit was based on the artwork of 28 contemporary Chinese artists. Throughout the exhibit, it was discussing the fall of communism, poverty, the essence of time, resistance, rebellion and the conservation of history. Some of the artwork I saw were created by Zhu Jinshi, Qiu Zhijie, Zhang Huan, and Shang Yixin, just to name a few. The exhibit was on two floors of the museum. When I first entered the exhibit, it led me to a big white room with art being displayed on all walls. The first room was based on the Coca Cola project in which there was a tall case of Coca Cola bottles being displayed right when you walk in. To the right was a clear box that held burnt down Coca Cola bottles. These items being displayed made me want to read about the project since it was a familiar company that most people know. Some of the other rooms were structured differently. Some had sculptures, audio v isuals, interactive pieces and others had modified furniture but every piece of art had a description next to it which told who the artist was as well as the meaning of the art itself. The materials used for some of the art works included wood, bamboo, and rice paper. The second floor to the exhibit is mostly abstract art work. The overall theme of this was to express their preservation of Chinese culture being good and bad aspects through art. A Community Social Event Programme For A Group Of People...

Introduction This is a project proposal for a community social event programme for a group of people over the age of 65 years. The project will identify an important need to address loneliness in old age which is a major health concern. This project proposal will explain the stages of planning the programme. Defining the Problem After contacting several organisations in the Donegal area, from the Active Retirement Association, the Family Resource Centre, the local public health nurse, and the neighbouring community centre that caters for all age groups, I became aware of a group of over 65 years old adults who has experienced some level of loneliness. The local public health nurse outlined the need to address the issue of loneliness in older people in order to improve their overall physical and mental wellbeing. After consulting a committee member in my local community hall, I became aware of how few social activities are organised for this age group. The committee member outlined the need for a physical activity programme that would reach out to older people, as there is currently no programme in place. The local community hall provides an excellent service for the youth but little has been done with the retired members of the locality. This proves disappointing as positive ageing is in everyone’s be st interest. This social event programme will prove important to enhance social cohesion and empower active ageing thereby improving quality of life as people age (Department ofShow MoreRelatedDangers Of Loneliness And Social Isolation1510 Words   |  7 PagesAs the UK population rapidly ages, one of the biggest challenges faced by the society is that of loneliness and social isolation consequently the issue must be addressed in the interest of the wider population and community. â€Å"Loneliness† is a subjective feeling of a loss of meaningful social relationships, while â€Å"social isolation† is an objective measurement indicating a lack of social interaction and relationships which could be caused by deterioration in health (Biordi and Nicholson 2008). Analyzing How Robert Browning Uses Dramatic Monologue to...

Analyzing How Robert Browning Uses Dramatic Monologue to Portray Madness in His Poems My Last Duchess and Porphyrias Lover A dramatic monologue is when a character in a piece of writing speaks their thoughts and feelings out loud. It is used because it gives an insight into the persons mind. Browning chose this form for the two poems because it makes the poem feel more realistic and you know everything the character is feeling it also subconsciously makes the reader feel certain emotions towards particular characters. The poems reflect the Victorian mind by talking about madness. During the Victorian era madness was considered taboo- respectable people did not speak of it whether in public or in†¦show more content†¦The Duchess is very friendly with everyone, whether they are equal or below her status, the Duke eventually gets too jealous and suspicious of the Duchess, and has her murdered. The Duke then tells an emissary of the Count, whos daughter he would like as his next wife. In the poem features of speech are used to betray the Dukes state of mind. A heart -- how shall I say?-- too soon made glad, Somehow-- I know not how-- as if she rankedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ The hyphens show the Dukes pauses in his speech, this indicates that the Duke is nervous. Other poetic techniques such as rhyming couplets are used. Thats my last Duchess painted on the wall, Looking as if she were alive. I call That piece a wonder, now: Fra Pandolfs hands Worked busily a day, and there she stands. This is an example of rhyming couplets, using this technique makes the poem have a constant rhythm and it therefore flows better, or it would if enjambment wasnt used as it is here. Enjambment is where instead of pausing at the end of a line you pause at the end of the sentence so the poem makes sense. This also makes the poem feel more like a story or a monologue than a poem, this is the reason Browning uses it; it is the style that he is trying to achieve. The rhyme scheme is different to that of My Last Duchess, instead of

Money Growth Rule Essay Example For Students

Money Growth Rule Essay Money Growth RuleThe Money Growth Rule is based upon a theory originally set forth by Milton Friedman as a solution to keep the United States economy on a controlled course of growth. The thoery revolves around the premise that the best monetary policy that the Federal Reserve can follow is to establish a constant growth rate of the money supply independent of current economic fluctuations. The reasoning is that as the economy experiences changes in relative output, the money supply can have dramatic effects upon the economy. Additionally, by establishing a money growth rule, Friedman believed that this would eliminate the possibility of short-run mismanagement and, in the end, be more beneficial for the economy. The problem with balancing an economy is that human judgment and evaluation of economic situations enter into the equation. Establishing a constant growth level in the money supply would eliminate the decision making process of the central banker. The problem with human intervention is the short-sided nature of many of the policies designed to aid the economy. Such interventions, which yields unintended negative consequences, is the result of the time inconsistency problem. This problem is understood through situations during which central bankers conduct monetary policy in a discretionary way and pursue expansionary policies that are attractive in the short-run, but lead to detrimental long-run outcomes. Friedman believes that by leaving money growth decisions to an individual, the results are poor long-run management and eventually high inflation rates, an obvious detriment to the economy. The idea of the money growth rule is contingent upon the relationship between the money supply and inflation. Therefore, the question arises whether there even is a relationship between money supply and inflation. As stated earlier, one can see a relation between money and inflation. Presented above is series data that displays this relationship between money supply and the inflation rate over the previous decades. The problem is that there are fluctuations within the data and therefore a broader definition of the money supply must be utilized. Based on the research of Dr. Terry J. Fitzgerald, an economist at the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank, if one defines money supply as M2, when examining the data over a multiple year progression, a pattern begins to present itself. Further, by graphing the difference between adjusted money growth and inflation, the link becomes evident. These graphs show the weight that changes to the money supply can have upon an economys inflation rate. Fine- tuning the money supply can be detrimental. Clearly, becoming too involved with tinkering with the economy will do more harm than good. The problem is that the full effect of an action does not become realized because of a time lag. Corrective actions will require a few fiscal quarters in order to evaluate whether it has been effective. The private sector is relatively stable; therefore the government should not become too involved, but rather follow some semblance or a constant growth policy. A more liberal view of the money growth rule would be not to target a specific rate, but rather target a certain range of values. This more liberal theory still follows the same central idea that the private sector is relatively stable and government intervention can be detrimental. However, the goal is now to opt for a more flexible interpretation of Friedmans rule. By establishing a target range, one receives the benefit of constant growth rule. The range essentially serves as boundaries for individual decision-making and prevents policy makers from taking action that will increase the money supply and inflation. However, the range has the ability to compensate for dramatic events such as September 11, 2001, where immediate and dramatic action becomes necessary. As one economist from the Bank of Canada stated, Our goal is to avoid disasters, like the inflation of the 1970s. Anything else is a bonus.Eliminating the ability to adjust the rate simply ties the Feds hands and removes th e ability of monetary policy to serve as a cushion to the economy. Adopting a more liberal Money Growth Rule seems to offer the best of both worlds by allowing for prudent and bounded discretionary action. .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 , .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .postImageUrl , .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 , .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366:hover , .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366:visited , .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366:active { border:0!important; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366:active , .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366 .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8a9798d525b5fab50edb6d8629e3d366:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Life Of George Washington EssayIdeally, the Federal Reserve is in place to curtail inflation and help guide the economy. This is not to say that the goal of low inflation is undesirable, but rather that the Federal Reserve should approach the situation from a 5 year perspective, rather than eliminating the control of the money supply all together. In doing so, this will allow flexibility within the economy, while still preserving the idea of controlling growth over a timeframe to reduce inflation. http://www.stern.nyu.edu/nroubini/NOTES/CHAP6.HTM#topic5Words/ Pages : 792 / 24

Definition of Deadrise Used in Shipbuilding

Definition of Deadrise Used in Shipbuilding How to Measure Deadrise Deadrise is measured two ways, by a linear measurement like inches or centimeters and by expressing it as an angle. Let’s look at the angular measurement first. Looking at the cross section of a hull, draw a vertical line through the center of the vessel to the bottom of the keel. The top of this vertical line should be even with the chine, which is where the hull meets the topsides. Now draw a horizontal line which intersects both sides of the chine and the top of the vertical line you drew before. You should now have a 90-degree angle formed by the vertical and horizontal lines. Draw one more line from the point where your horizontal line meets the chine to the bottom of your vertical line at the bottom center of the keel. The triangle you formed is made up of three angles. Deadrise expressed as an angle is the measurement in degrees of the bottom of the triangle. To Calculate in Linear Terms   To calculate deadrise in linear terms you will use the same triangle as above but now you will be using a ratio to express the deadrise. Much like the roof of a building, deadrise in linear terms is written as inches per foot. First, determine the number of inches from the 90-degree angle of the triangle along the horizontal leg to the chine. Next, determine the measurement in feet from the bottom of the keel to the 90-degree angle of the triangle. Take the results and write then as inches/foot. A Measurement at a Single Point on a Vessel’s Hull Deadrise is only a measurement at a single point on a vessel’s hull. Construction plans will note the deadrise at regular intervals along the length of the hull. Since deadrise is a measurement based on the position of the chine it is possible to have complex expressions of deadrise because of multi-chine and planning hulls. If you are asked to measure deadrise you should be given a point to make your measurement. For example; deadrise at 20 feet from the bow, or deadrise at rear bulkhead. Alternate Spellings Dead Rise Common Misspellings Dead Rise The Transition From Chine to Keel One way to make a quick assessment of the purpose and ride quality of a vessel is to view the stern from the rear so you can see the transition from chine to keel. If its a sharp V shape below the water means the ride will be smooth but the ship may wallow back and forth ferries and riverboats have this design so they can operate in both directions without turning around.   If the deadrise is shallow or flat at the stern the vessel will not have much roll or wallow but it will slap into the surface with each wave. A V shape allows a smooth transition while a shallower deadrise causes a sudden impact with each wave. The flat design has less drag and therefore is found on cargo ships and other low drag vessels. Cushion effect can be a problem for some heavily loaded cargo ships in shallow waters like canals. A rolled, or soft, chine means the vessel is meant to lean and roll smoothly. This is true of most sail-powered vessels where there is a counterweight in a deep keel. Take a look at all kinds of common hull shapes to understand more about their uses. The definition of draft will also be useful when learning about naval architecture.

Students Debt Crisis in America Research Proposal

Students Debt Crisis in America - Research Proposal Example Of the outstanding debts, only 60% have plans of repaying while the rest either ask for loan forgiveness or default indicating that the students are in financial distress. The debt crisis in America calls for long term solutions. This will suggest solutions to the ever-increasing student debt crisis in America Solutions to the student debt crisis lie with the federal government policies that address student loans and their associated problems. Several people proposed policies that are helpful in handling the debt crisis among American students. The proposed Responsible Student Loan Act should be implemented to help in dealing with the problem of the debt crisis among the federal students. This Act was reset to include the percentage determined by the education secretary that covers administration and borrowers benefits. This plan focused on the interest rates that are related to the needs of the borrowers. It also sought to cap the federal subsidized loan by 6.8% while the unsubsidized loans and the parent loans capped at 8.25%. This Act also proposed that the education secretary in America should reissue the PLUS loans and the federal Stanford (Federal Reserve Bank of New York 102). The US government should reform the bankruptcy code that is currently offering financial distress to the loan borrowers both at the individual and business level. The code must reformation in order to allow the students and the business people to expunge their debts and restart their projects. The fresh start of their lives is difficult for the students with loan debts because Congress enacted legislation that prohibits discharging the federal students from their loans in the cases of bankruptcy. The 2005 act extended the undue hardship of the borrowers thus making students suffer highly from the financial debt crisis especially from the private loans.

Evolution by Natural Selection Essay Example for Free

Evolution by Natural Selection Essay a. Evolution by Natural Selection: This theory is developed by Charles Darwin as one of the parts of his theory of evolution. This theory embodies the thought that species change and evolve over generations and that the mechanisms for the species change along with it. b. Inheritance: This theory, introduced by Gregor Mendel, embodies the principle that traits are passed on from one generation to the next through the genes that carry them. This means that traits are inherited from the parents to the offspring through these hereditary factors. c. Cells: The Cell theory from Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann, discussed that all cells come from preexisting cells and that cells are the basic elements for life to exist. d. Biological Classification: Carolus Linnaeus began the classification of different species according to their similarities and differences called nomenclature. e. Bioenergetics: is based on the concept that there is an energy that powers life and that it follows the rules of the energies that exist in the inanimate world. f. Homeostasis: Claude Bernard discovered that organisms function best under a narrow range of conditions and that they maintain internal conditions to maintain stability, which allows them to live in a larger range of environments. g. Ecosystems: This deals with the concept that organisms don’t exist alone but is part of a community of other living organisms that interact with one another. (â€Å"What is Biology? †) In relation to the news today and the theories’ applications in the 21st century, a test connected with the Inheritance theory recently revealed that genetics may determine the extent we are influenced by social drinking clues. The article states that a specific form of the Dopamine D4 receptor gene may make people more sensitive to craving caused by alcohol-related cues from other people. This, the article reports, â€Å"†¦may increase the risk for extensive alcohol use or abuse when spending time with heavy-drinking peers (Association for Psychological Science, 25 July 2010). 2. Scientific Method The website began with the question â€Å"Have you ever noticed if you place a plant near a window, that after a while, the plant grows or leans toward the window? † and was followed by the question â€Å"Have you ever wondered why the plant grows toward the window? † This required a hypothesis formulation in order for there to be a guide on how to arrive on the answer. The hypothesis that I have chosen for the experiment on the website was that â€Å"plants respond to the light which they need to make their food. † After selecting my hypothesis, I chose to â€Å"grow three plants with light to the left and glass to the right and three more with light to the right and glass to the left† and look for the difference in the â€Å"direction the plant is growing/leaning. † The result was that â€Å"The leaves of the plants with the light on the left turned toward the left and the tops of the plants grew toward the left. The leaves of the plants with the light on the right turned toward the right and the tops grew toward the right. † This supported my hypothesis that light was the reason that the plants grew toward the windows where the light was. In the scientific method, the whole process began with observation and questioning the behavior of the plant as it grew toward the window and analyzing the possible variables that may affect this behavior. Considering that I had a basic idea about how plants grow, I made a hypothesis that was likely the case, though there may be some other variables that influence the behavior. These other variables made me think of testing them along with the main reason I had been thinking about. In order to test all the elements involved, I proceeded testing with both the light and the glass. Putting all the variables in not only confirms one or more of the variables, but also eliminates other variables that might not have any weight on the observations made. With the results supporting the hypothesis, and eliminating other non-weight bearing variables (in this case, the glass), then the hypothesis is accepted. The explanation in this case would be that plants respond to the light that enables them to create their own food. From here, it is possible to have other questions that would lead to the repeat in the cycle of the scientific method back to observations and questions. These questions could include how plants would react when the source of light comes from different directions. In my own personal experience, I have applied the scientific method to some of the simplest questions I’ve had the chance to encounter in my life. One such example where I constantly apply it is when making projects whether they are for school or for personal enjoyment, especially when the project requires so many redundant details such as cutting strips of paper or stitching something up or anything else. Although this is not exactly the same in doing scientific experiments, the same principles apply. Since I am always concerned with efficiency in doing things, I always ask myself, what is the shortest way I’ll be able to do this while maintaining a standard of quality? This forms the observation and questioning phase. From past experiences and from certain observations, there are many methods that can be applied and I think of the best ones that might apply to what I am currently working on. These comply with the hypothesis that one of the methods that I have thought of will work, which brings me to the experimentation phase. Here, I test which ones work best on a small scale, checking which ones I finish more quickly and produce the same results despite separate repetitions of the method. Upon seeing the results of my experiments, I finally come to the conclusion that at least one of the methods is efficient and effective in producing mass quantities of material for the project I am working on. Sometimes, this leads to other questions such as whether or not the method can be applied to other materials, or which materials work best with that method. This may then catapult me back to the scientific method from the beginning. References What is Biology?. Whole Language versus Phonics Essay -- Education Language Communicatio

Whole Language versus Phonics Whole Language versus Phonics has been a question among many top educational groups for years. Which is the best way to teach kindergarten children the proper way to speak and learn the English Language? There are many valid reasons why experts argue for both phonics and/or whole language. Both seem to be exceptional ways to master the English Language. The purpose of this research paper is to compare phonics versus whole language and to determine how technology can support each approach. The history of the use of phonics dates back to the 1700’s. Backs then, children were taught to read through their memorization of the twenty-six-letter alphabet. Since many books hadn’t been written, their primary textbook was the Bible. Although there is no accounts for when whole language originated some believe that it was around the same time as phonics. The whole language reading method was widespread for thirty years, from around 1940 to 1970. From around 1970 to 1990, phonics was popular. Whole Language gained the most recent foothold around 1990. (Stahl 1996) Several times they have gone back and forth. The debate over whole language and phonics has gone on for years. Which way is best in teaching children how to read? The education world has been debating this issue for years and there still are no exact answers. In more recent year’s instruction specialist have argued that some sort of middle ground should be reached because it would give children the benefits of both. (Cromwell 1997) Some form of middle ground needs to be obtained if children’s needs are going to be met. What is whole language? It is the process of learning a language through whole word teaching. British Petroleum “Bp” Oil Spill

British Petroleum â€Å"BP† Oil Spill On April 20th 2010, British Petroleum better known as BP had an extremely destructive impact on the environment and the livelihood of those in Gulf Coast area of Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. BP’s Deep-water Horizon oil rig was located offshore, 52 miles off the southeast coast of Venice, Louisiana. An explosion on the Deep-water Horizon oil rig caused a massive fire that claimed the lives of eleven BP workers. After 36 hours of burning, the Deep-water Horizon oil rig sunk to the bottom of the ocean and during this time there were different accounts of how much oil was leaking, if any.Within two weeks, estimates ranged from 8,000 barrels a day to none, back up to 1,000 and some even estimated at 60,000 barrels a day, this made it clear that no one really knew how much oil was being released into the ocean. Initially, besides the deaths, BP made it appear as if it was a mild disaster for the organization. However, the reality o f this disaster was that eleven people lost their lives, an estimated 4. 9 million barrels of oil leaked in the Gulf of Mexico for five months and only approximately 800 million cleaned up. As a result, sea animals lost their lives, many fisherman lost their livelihood, and even the tourism suffered. In the end, BP was fined four billion dollars by the government of the United States, agreed to pay $525 million in civil penalties and has already paid billions in civil claims to all who were impacted by the spill. In addition, three BP employees were indicted on criminal charges and BP CEO Tony Hayward stepped down four months after the spill. The above summary about the tragic BP oil spill was as a result of nbcnews. com website. The article detailed the result of the BP Oil spill of 2010. After two and a half years, the US government and BP agreed on a settlement of 4. billion and the plea of guilty of eleven manslaughter charges. The payments will be paid out in a span of 5 years. This is the largest such penalty ever to an organization. This settlement does not include civil cases that are pending against them from their workers. BP had also agreed in March of 2012 to pay 7. 8 billion to more than 100,000 businesses that were directly affected by the oil spill. The positive aspect of this massive oil spill is that BP took responsibility for the oil spill by pleading guilty and paying billions of dollars for clean-up to businesses, fisherman, families, etc. and committing o getting the coast line back to the way it was before the industrial accident. In addition, BP dedicated a section of their website to the Gulf oil spill in an effort to keep the lines of communication open. BP even used television commercials to communicate the progress of the clean-up efforts and BP employed thousands of people for the clean-up efforts. However, there is a fundamental belief that had BP had not been so greedy and negligent, this environmental disaster could have been avoi ded. BP made many cost saving decisions that increased the risk of a spill and did not closely monitor their contractors. There were so many negative effects of this spill to include the loss of lives, fisherman who lost their livelihood, tourism suffered, wildlife and their breeding grounds were displaced, oil prices skyrocketed, oil rig workers lost their jobs and worst of all, no one will ever truly know the future affects this disaster will cause for the wildlife and environment. In the end, BP continues to rake in billions (last quarter 93 billion) in revenue. The 4. 5 billion BP had to pay to the US government pales in comparison to their profits every year.

Why the Employee Engagement Survey is Out of Date - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1247 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Public Relations Essay Type Analytical essay Level High school Did you like this example? May 25, 2015 Abstract The objective of this project is to examine a current article and determine the capacity to analysis the current event by developing a rational summary (Schinker, 2015). This article is about the review of a somewhat outdated management method that has recently been given an updated title. The company examined within the article can be any kind of general company and is intended to be used as an illustration of what any company is able of transforming (Schinker, 2015). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Why the Employee Engagement Survey is Out of Date" essay for you Create order This is article is intended to demonstration what is not functioning within a company and how that company can go about revamping their method of providing an enjoyable work experience. Current Event Summarization The article that I found for my current event was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Why the employee engagement survey is out of date?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ and is basically a summarization of another article titled à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Its Time To Rethink The Employee Engagement Issueà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ with an ultimate resolution. So to begin the author of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Its Time To Rethink The Employee Engagement Issueà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ is Josh Bersin and based off of my article he argues that the conventional yearly engagement survey is invalid and unnecessary (Red, 2015). Bersin asks for more of an all-inclusive, unified, and instantaneous method to assessing and pushing for greater amounts of associate dedication and desire (Bersin, 2014). The most noted yearly engagement survey developer was actu ally Gallup who created the initial survey over 30 years ago (Bersin, 2014). Gallup was initially motivated by the industrial engineer Frederick Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s work of the late-1800s (Bersin, 2014). Taylor was the first to notice the increased associate satisfaction on the steel businessà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ production rates (Bersin, 2014). My article continues to explain that Bersin has an argument that allows us to understand that this old evaluation standard is no longer applicable due to the fact that there are currently too many types of surveying tools used to gauge associate engagement (Red, 2015). The first reason why this evaluation standard is no longer applicable is because the standard is just too constricted (Red, 2015). Based off of my article Bersin implies that the conventional engagement survey is not as comprehensive as it could be (Red, 2015). Developing work societies mean redefining most management designs, the job atmosphere, and even the labor force itself which normally are excluded from most surveys (Red, 2015). Therefore, Bersin goes on to state that companies have to look past these aspects of engagement and come up with innovated ways to make their associates feel wanted and cherished (Red, 2015). Types of ways my article says this is possible could be by providing snack rooms, rooms to relax in, and even ways to eliminate stress such as yoga or a masseuses (Red, 2015). The other reason why this evaluation standard is no longer applicable is because the term engagement is misleading (Red, 2015). Based off of my article it states that Bersin even has a problem with the term à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“engagementà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ he says that engaging a companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s associates is no longer adequate (Red, 2015). He says that a companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s associates have to ready to commit or marry the company (Red, 2015). Yet, the only way this would be possible is by establishing a company that makes their associates want to come to work (Red, 2015). Based off of the article Bersin feels that it would be best if companies began utilizing a new evaluation standard besides the conventional yearly engagement survey (Red, 2015). With that said a new method that companies could adopt would be by gauging the delight and career fulfillment on a regular basis (Red, 2015). By placing instantaneous reaction instruments to a companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s associates it allows these associates to straightforwardly convey their emotions to management so that they can control any disputes before that become overwhelming (Red, 2015). The article also states that based off of Bersinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s perspective that associates should be viewed as the core to a companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s production instead of as just cogs in the machine, which can be interpreted by saying that instead of a company working their associates to the bone that they could utilize the new method mentioned above and make themselves seductive to the associates and they will engage themselves much more often (Red, 2015). Current Event Determination Earlier this week we discussed a topic called the quality of work life programs. I feel that this article greatly relates to this concept due to the fact that by engaging a companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s associates they can determine what makes going to work irresistible. This is what the quality of work life programs do for the companies that use them. Therefore, we can see with the following chart that quality of work life programs could basically be the solution to the engagement survey problem. Quality of work life Job satisfaction Performance Work propose, Job atmosphere amenities, Work reassurance, Health, Incomes compensations, Job life equilibrium, Education growth, Management Associate equality The first concept leads to the next concept Excellent company to work for minus pressures, improved enthusiasm fulfillment, decreased truancy, smaller turnover. The second concept leads to the last concept Increase in sales, assets ROAG, shareholder worth, company sustainability, competitive advantage, associate awareness, scientific guidance elasticity. (Gayathiri Ramakrishnan, 2013). With what I have learned this week in regards to what the quality of work life programs are they are essentially expected to help enhance the personal lives of a companyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s associates and their functionality to more of an acceptable standard. Now with this said to determine the solution to the question of whether I feel the article discussed a prediction of a recovery, if a negative approach, or success, if a new launch or revamping of a current policy/approach, to this issue?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ (Schinker, 2015). I believe that with the concept that the end of the article à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Why the employee engagement survey is out of date?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ discussed that the quality of work life programs are the solution to the engagement survey issue and could become very effective in the long run for many companies. I also feel that as long as companies attempt to work with their associates this concept will become even better than the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“engagement surveyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ concept. Therefore, I believe that as long as companies are trying to enhance their method of associate engagement and try to utilize some of the abundant resources accessible to them that they can handle their functionality issues successfully. Conclusion With all of the material from above I trust that the article à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Why the employee engagement survey is out of date?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ is an applicable article that completely displays that I understand what make this a management issue (Schinker, 2015). The rationale for this is due to the fact that the article expresses a procedure that is similar to the quality of work life programs, which are a management concept that we discussed this week. The quality of work life programs can also be used as a means for managers to enhance the lives of their associates and the inclusive functionality of the company. References Bersin, J.
